Disability Insurance
Disability insurance will protect you and your family if anyone were to have a serious or severe injury. Disability insurance is almost like life insurance, it will pay you and your family a fixed income or a lump sum of money to cover any doctor bills or bills you will acquire while being injured. However, when looking for disability insurance there is more than one kind you can buy, and you will have to choose which one is right for your family.
You can opt in to get total and permanent disability this will mean your disability has to be permanent and total; your doctor will have to verify that you are totally disabled. You are not going to recover from the injury, you are unable to work at your job, and you cannot get qualified to do something else. When you have been proved to be totally disabled you will get income from your insurance policy that can be used to pay your bills, and medical expenses. When you have total and permanent disability insurance you will bet money every week or monthly depending on your policy rules unlike income protection insurance that will only pay you temporarily until you can go back to work.
Once you figure out which insurance you want, you will want to make sure that the plan has certain options. You will want to make sure your insurance pays for mental rehabilitation and physical therapy. These are all problems you may encounter if you become disabled, and if you do you will want your disability insurance to cover these expenses.
The other option you will have to look at is short-term disability. This will only cover disabilities for a certain amount of time, which will not be very long. If you are not able to work for a limited about of time then short-term disability insurance will pay you a percentage of your salary. The insurance will pay you this until you can go back to work or until your coverage expires, whichever happens first.
Short-term disability insurance is more for people who are not financially stable enough to get through a tough time if they were to become disabled and unable to work for a very short time frame. However, it will only cover a time frame for you to be out of work for about a year, so if something happens for you to be out of work longer you may not get enough money to get you through your hard time.
No matter which disability policy you choose it will cover accidents, illness, and giving birth, anything that will prevent you from working for a length of time. However, this coverage will only help you out for a pre-specified time, meaning it will not last long.
It will also not give you your full salary during this time frame like the full disability insurance will. So there are many pros and cons you will want to way when deciding which insurance policy is best for you and your family. You will not know which coverage you will need till something happens, but it would be better to have something instead of nothing at all. For more information visit umav.org to get more details.
